Summer Camp 2018 - Earth Math

When we say Math is all around us, we should start from where we are standing!
My colleague came up with this idea to 'show' how math can be observed and taught in a fun way to kids.
Math matters ran a summer camp in Karachi from 02-19 July 2018 and it also included Earth Theme.

This post includes the activities done and what concepts were learned.
To start off we colored the pot in an open place.

Kids learned color theory while mixing blue and yellow to make green color

Artists in the making

While kids put their pots to dry out, they played on a geoboard to make rectangle and square, it readied them on making a boundary inside which they would plant seeds.

Kids also tried making letters and numbers

After filling soil, kids made boundary with Popsicle sticks, counted them along and suggested the total is their 'perimeter', of course, they were right!
If you are teaching older kids, introduce the word 'perimeter' otherwise stick to 'boundary'.

We had millet (bajra) as seeds. It grows overnight!

All the kids lovingly watered their pots and were anxious to see them grow!
