Meet the 2D and 3D shapes

2D and 3D shapes are fun and relatively easy topics to learn in math, mostly because they are visual.

Once the kids have mastered basic knowledge, a game called "Shape sorter" can be played with them.

You can use the following file and print it out to play the game.

Make two teams:

Start: ask questions, in turn, this sequence.

-Is the shape 2Dor 3D?

-If it's a 2D, the team asks if it has more than 1 side? 

-Keep guessing the shape till reached the right one.

Hundred Chart activities

A hundred chart or 120 chart is the ultimate tool for primary students to learn and practice any concept.

What is a 100/120 chart?

It's basically a grid with ten boxes across one above the other, a total of 12 rows with numbers 1 till 120 written from top left till bottom right.

Skip count by 4s

Kids get to see a hundred chart in their classrooms but it's ON the wall or the display board. Any other place they have seen is in their copies. Its sole purpose is to practice writing numbers and learning the sequence.
But it can be used for teaching many other concepts. To name a few; odd-even, skip counting, and pattern recognition.

In the above picture, the student is circling numbers after skip counting by 4.

I regularly use a hundred chart in my math class, first used it for learning skip counting and it really helps students get to grasp the concept of multiplication tables. They were also able to see how more than one fact matches the other for example 3X4 is the same as 4X3 and formed the "commutative property" themselves.   :)

Explore the world of shapes

 

We all have taught our children about shapes. Square,rectangle and a pointy triangle, then there comes 3D shapes; cube, cone and sphere.

But have we thought of combining these shapes to make more shapes or designs?

I'm gonna tell you very craft way of combining a "simple shape" and make it into a "3D shape".

Let's get those two point in bold. Simple shape is triangle and the 3D shape is a tetrahedron.

 

Hmm, pretty clear to me, you tell me how helpful it was?

Making the tetrahedron is so fun that we had it as an activity in our game night for the homeschooling kids.

First name that comes in the mind is, its a "pyramid".

And its true!

The tetrahedron is one kind of pyramid, with a flat triangle base and triangular faces connecting to a common point.

 A tetrahedron is also known as a "triangular pyramid". 

A combination of tetrahedron is called a Sierpinski triangle
